This month at American Family Martial Arts your child will be learning about the Life Skill TEAMWORK. There are so many areas in life where teamwork is important. Teamwork is not something that is easy to teach but it is something that needs to be taught early to ensure proper development.
Definition: cooperative or coordinated efforts on the part of a group of persons acting together as a team or in the interests of a common cause.
As we teach teamwork this month here are some ways for you to reinforce the lessons at home.
- Make a list of chores that must be done around the house and have your child pick the chores that are age appropriate
- Play family games and model good sportsmanship and fair play
- Have your child participate in helping with more difficult chores such as cooking, yard work, washing the car or organizing.

By making a written list, you can show your child what the family needs to accomplish & how them being part of the team crosses more things off the list. The reality is that not every parent, teacher, therapist or counselor has the means to teach teamwork effectively. As Martial Artists at American Family Martial Arts, we are in a unique position to instill activities that properly engage children with other children their own age.
Watch this fun video of our Extreme kids (ages 10-14) working as a team to lift a staff. While practicing teamwork skills, they are also improving their chamber technique for kicks and building muscles in their legs. One of the things we excel at doing during karate classes at American Family Martial Arts is incorporating FUN into our learning. Study after study shows that everyone (even adults) learn better when having fun.
American Family Martial Arts embodies the teamwork ethic: from helping our families that flooded in 2016 to our families helping us remodel in 2017!

American Family Martial Arts uses the SKILLZ@ program created by Melody Johnson. We began implementing this program in 2014 for our 3-6 year olds. It was a big success-children stopped crying and so did instructors. In 2018, American Family Martial Arts (AFMA) implemented the program for our 7-14 year old age groups. This change has seen an increase in retention and happiness with our karate programs. Students are no longer over or under challenged.
