Your child is ready to try their very first martial arts class!
You’ve made the call, scheduled your visit, and now you’re standing in the doorway wondering:
“Wait… what should they wear?”
At American Family Martial Arts in Baton Rouge, we make first classes as stress-free as possible. You don’t need to buy anything fancy, and there’s no pressure to commit right away.
Let’s walk through exactly what your child should wear (and bring) to their first class.
For the First Class: Keep It Simple and Comfortable
If you’re coming for a trial class or first visit, your child doesn’t need a uniform yet. We recommend they wear:
- A clean, comfortable t-shirt
- Athletic pants or leggings (no jeans or skirts)
- No jewelry or watches
- Hair tied back if long
- Bare feet (we train on padded mats)
Basically if your child can run, jump, and stretch in it, they can train in it.
Avoid bulky clothes, buttons, zippers, or anything too loose. Think of it like PE or gym class clothing but without sneakers.
What Is a Gi (Uniform) and When Do They Get One?
Once your child decides to enroll, we’ll provide a traditional martial arts uniform called a gi (pronounced “gee”).
It includes:
- A white or school-branded top
- Matching pants
- A white belt to get started
Wearing a gi helps kids feel like they’re part of something special. It also promotes discipline and unity. Everyone looks the same, so the focus is on learning, not fashion.
At American Family Martial Arts, we provide a gi after enrollment, so there’s no need to buy one in advance.
What About Shoes?
No shoes are worn on the training mats.
Martial arts is practiced barefoot for safety and hygiene. Our mats are cleaned regularly, and all students take off shoes before stepping onto the floor.
If your child has sensory issues or specific foot concerns, talk to our instructors. We’ll work with you to find a comfortable solution.
Do They Need Gloves or Gear?
Not for beginners.
At American Family Martial Arts, we keep gear minimal at the start. As your child progresses, they may use:
- Focus mitts
- Kicking shields
- Light protective gear (in upper levels)
We provide any needed equipment for early training, no need to bring anything but a water bottle and a positive attitude!
A Few More Tips for First-Time Parents
- Arrive 10-15 minutes early: This gives your child time to settle in, meet the instructor, and feel comfortable before class starts.
- Encourage watching a class first: If your child is nervous, they can observe before jumping in.
- Stay positive: Some kids are shy the first day. That’s okay! Most warm up quickly after a class or two.
- Bring water: Hydration matters, especially after physical activity.
