Martial arts is not one-size-fits-all, especially when it comes to kids.
At American Family Martial Arts in Baton Rouge, we teach students as young as 3 and as old as… Well, let’s just say “grown-ups!” But what a 3-year-old needs is very different from what a 10-year-old needs and it’s not just about ability.
It’s about brain development. It’s about attention span. It’s about what motivates them and how they respond to feedback.
That’s why our programs are divided by age groups so every child gets what they need at the stage they’re in.
Why Age-Based Classes Matter
You wouldn’t put a toddler in a middle school classroom, right? The same idea applies to martial arts.
When classes are too broad, younger kids get overwhelmed and older kids get bored. That’s why we separate our students into programs designed around how they learn, how they move, and how they grow.
At American Family Martial Arts, we don’t just teach martial arts. We teach:
- Confidence
- Discipline
- Focus
- Respect
- Physical control
And those skills look different at every age.
Our Martial Arts Programs by Age
Tiny Tigers (Ages 3-4)
This class is all about movement, fun, and structure.
At this age, kids are still developing basic motor skills and learning how to follow simple instructions. In our Tiny Tigers program, we focus on:
- Listening games
- Balance and coordination drills
- Simple martial arts moves
- Learning how to line up, wait, and take turns
It’s playful, short, and packed with age-appropriate challenges that build their confidence.
Tiny Titans (Ages 4-6)
Now we start adding in more structured techniques.
In Tiny Titans, kids learn:
- Beginner martial arts stances and movements
- Respect (bowing, following commands)
- Teamwork and focus through games
- Safety and self-control
This program helps prepare kids for school by reinforcing listening skills and patience in a fun, active setting.
Core Skillz (Ages 7-9)
Now we get into more serious martial arts while still keeping it fun.
At this age, kids can follow more complex instructions. They’re better at teamwork and can handle longer class times. In Core Skillz, we cover:
- Self-defense foundations
- Coordination, strength, and flexibility
- Focus and discipline drills
- Character-building lessons
We also introduce personal goal-setting and belt rank progression.
Extreme Skillz (Ages 10-14)
This is where students begin to really develop power, speed, and higher-level self-defense.
Extreme Skillz students work on:
- Advanced martial arts combinations
- Physical conditioning
- Leadership training
- Emotional control under pressure
- Real-world self-defense skills
We also help students build the confidence to lead warmups, assist younger classes, and become role models.
Teen & Adult Martial Arts (15+)
Teenagers and adults get a more challenging and rewarding experience with:
- Full-body workouts
- Advanced self-defense
- Stress relief and confidence building
- Real techniques for real-world safety
It’s never too late to start!
