Building a Better Future for Our Community through Martial Arts
Helping the community has always been important to the husband and wife team at American Family Martial Arts. Since Michael and Jacky Tullier began operating schools in 1994, they have always made an effort to participate in their local community and to give back.
So far in 2019, there have been many fun events! Of course the annual Family Fit Day in late May/early June, is a must do. This year it was held by the lovely lake at Pennington Biomedical Center. Who knew there was a lake back there! This event is hosted by Healthy BR through the mayor-president’s office and features a slew of ACTIVE organizations like: BREC on the Geaux, Southside YMCA, KidZone, The Safety Place and lots of others. And Mayor Sharon Broome got in on the fun!
For our 4th year, we had an activity tent at the Anna Grace Quarter Marathon. This event seeks to bring public awareness to the fact that 1 in 4 pregnancies end in a loss. While parents are running the marathon, there is a tent village set up with activities for the kids to do. American Family Martial Arts tent has the super fun board breaking!
Another contribution are donations for Silent Auctions. American Family Martial Arts donates a free birthday party for the organization to auction off! This hour and half birthday party has everything covered from the party decorations to the FUN! All a parent has to do is invite the kids and bring a cake!
Instead of a dull boring certificate, American Family Martial Arts makes a fun container with actual party treat box items like a ninja cup, ninja stress ball, bouncy balls, chopsticks and of course “Chinese handcuffs” among other items.
Past recipients have been Magic Happens Rescue, Families Helping Families, LaSalle Elementary, Oak Grove Elementary and lots of other schools. Just give us a call if you would like this FUNraiser! (I know it’s a bad pun but I couldn’t resist.)
This year we’ve also adopted LaSalle Elementary and Louisiana Key Academy. At Lasalle, we’ve provided food for teacher appreciation week and broke boards at their PTO Walk-a-Thon & Day of Play! We’re currently helping with a supply drive for the Fall 2019 semester.
At Louisiana Key Academy, we’ve been PE Teacher for the day and provided some moving around during their summer camps! La Key Academy is a charter school that specializes in unlocking the potential of children with dyslexia and helping them succeed in life and school. Which is part of what American Family Martial Arts does! One of the things we do is work on life skills>>check out our blog: Be In the Know!
As part of American Family Martial Arts commitment to build a better community through martial arts, we held a Protect Yourself: woman’s self defense workshop. American Family Martial Arts donated half the proceeds from the workshop to the Iris Domestic Violence Center.
